Re. Draft Saving our Species conservation strategies
savingourspecies@environment.nsw.gov.au
Friends of Grasslands (FOG) is a community group dedicated to the conservation of natural temperate grassy ecosystems in south-eastern Australia. FOG advocates, educates and advises on matters to do with the conservation of native grassy ecosystems, and carries out surveys and other on-ground work. FOG is based in Canberra and its members include professional scientists, landowners, land managers and interested members of the public.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the draft conservation strategies for threatened species. FOG offers brief comment on four draft strategies. The strategies:
Canberra Grassland Earless Dragon Tympanocryptis lineata, Site 1: Queanbeyan
Should mention working with ACT government where the only other sites of CGED are known. Also consider some novel approaches in extreme drought and heat conditions, such as watering and shading of site.
Hoary Sunray. Leucochrysum albicans subsp. tricolor - one of the six sites is Top Hut
Should mention other values at the site such Monaro Grassland Earless Dragon, and that Friends of Grasslands, a voluntary group, has a lease over the sites and is putting in huge hours to weed the site.
Should mention on p. 1 where to find appropriate monitoring techniques.
Silky Swainson-pea. Swainsona serica
Should encourage people and groups to survey for new locations, including to look out for and report these species, either via Canberra Nature Map or directly to Local Land Services.
Yass Daisy. Ammobium craspedioides
Should encourage people and groups to survey for new locations, including to look out for and report these species, either via Canberra Nature Map or directly to Local Land Services.
Yours sincerely
