Lawson Master Plan and Draft Estate Development Plan:

(Comments provided to the LDA via their Community Feedback Form)

Friends of Grasslands (FOG) is a community group dedicated to the conservation of natural temperate grassy ecosystems in south-eastern Australia. FOG advocates, educates and advises on matters to do with the conservation of grassy ecosystems, and carries out surveys and other on-ground work. FOG is based in Canberra and has a membership of more than 200 including professional scientists, landowners, land mangers and interested members of the public.

FOG is pleased to see there will be a buffer between the conservation area and residential development.  We also support cat containment within Lawson, given the high conservation value of the native grasslands to the north of the proposed estate.

FOG supports the proposed enhancement and rehabilitation of natural values in the open space areas and would like to see this strengthened by the use of native species compatible with the conservation vales of the nearby grassland reserves. FOG understands that the LDA is aware of the importance of the endangered Ginninderra Peppercress nearby, and asks that it is kept in mind when plantings occur in open space areas, particularly with wetland plantings at the mouth of College Creek.

FOG would also like to see a long term monitoring program adopted to inform the management of open space areas in the suburb.
