Dear Sir/Madam

New Public High School in East Gungahlin (Kenny)

Reference no: 2019/8599

Friends of Grasslands (FOG) is a community group dedicated to the conservation of natural temperate grassy ecosystems in south-eastern Australia. FOG advocates, educates and advises on matters to do with the conservation of grassy ecosystems, and carries out surveys and other on-ground work. FOG is based in Canberra and its members include professional scientists, landowners, land managers and interested members of the public.

While in principle FOG opposes any destruction of threatened species and their habitat, it notes that the proposal will impact on 0.52ha of a Striped Legless Lizard (SLL) population. However, the proposal does mean that the option of expanding the SLL population into the study area is no longer possible (recognizing that this would require habitat improvement). If the proposal is approved, we believe that some sort of offset should be offered to compensate for both the loss of this SLL population and of its future potential expansion. While small, offsets could include improvement of SLL habitat in Kenny Nature Reserve and/or inclusion in the school’s education program of maintenance and restoration of biodiversity assets near the school.

Yours sincerely
