Dear Sir/Madam

City Hill Section 63 Redevelopment Project, ACT

Reference no: 2019/8449

Friends of Grasslands (FOG) is a community group dedicated to the conservation of natural temperate grassy ecosystems in south-eastern Australia. FOG advocates, educates and advises on matters to do with the conservation of grassy ecosystems, and carries out surveys and other on-ground work. FOG is based in Canberra and its members include professional scientists, landowners, land managers and interested members of the public.

In relation to this project, FOG notes that there will be some impact on a low density Golden Sun Moth (GSM) population breeding in an exotic ground cover area. In principle, FOG opposes any impact on a threatened species such as the GSM. We note that the referral makes reference to offsets for the development. We are not sure what those offsets might entail, but would like to suggest that consideration be given to either restoration work on the NCA grass lands at Yarramundi Reach, or alternatively removal of the pine plantation at Stirling Park west to provide a link from Stirling Ridge through to the ACT park lands containing GSM in Yarralumla. While this would involve work on non-ACT government lands, it could provide a useful offset in this instance.

Yours sincerely
