Friends of Grasslands (FOG) is a community group dedicated to the conservation of natural temperate grassy ecosystems in south-eastern Australia, included related fauna species. FOG advocates, educates and advises on matters to do with the conservation of grassy ecosystems, and carries out surveys and other on-ground work. FOG is based in Canberra and its members include professional scientists, landowners, land managers and interested members of the public.
In responding to this referral, FOG is pleased to note that the development layout has been designed in a manner that will permit the retention of all remnant eucalypt trees within the site, including two large Blakely’s Red Gum trees.
FOG notes that the best 0.1 ha of the box-gum woodland will be kept and that there will be management to improve the ecological value of the site. While the loss is not large, we consider appropriate offsetting to include this management plus possibly improvement of the park opposite in Shackleton Street, in particular ongoing control of all woody weeds, significant grass weeds, and significant herbaceous weeds as mentioned in the referral.
